CASE #3

Increased Registration Conversion by 45% with Usability Testing

👤 My role: Senior UX Researcher (First UX Researcher at the company)
🏢 Company: Pikabu↗ — a Russian UGC platform analog of Reddit with 140+ million visits per month
📈 Key result: 45% increase in registration conversion rate
🏷️ Tags: #UsabilityTesting, #Registration, #UserOnboarding, #FormDesign, #ErrorHandling

Situation

  • A substantial number of users were engaging with the platform without authentication, limiting our ability to personalize their experience and understand their behavior
  • User registration and authentication were critical business priorities, as they enabled better content recommendations, community engagement, and more accurate analytics
  • The product team had no clear understanding of why users weren’t completing the registration process, as no formal research had been conducted
  • There was no established process for identifying or prioritizing UX improvements, resulting in decisions based primarily on internal assumptions
  • The company’s growth goals required increasing the percentage of registered users, but there was no data-driven strategy to achieve this

Task

Identify specific usability issues and friction points in the registration flow that were preventing users from completing the process

Action

I designed and executed a comprehensive usability testing initiative that included:

  1. Research Planning
    • Collaborated with product managers and analytics teams to understand current conversion metrics and identify key drop-off points in the registration funnel
    • Developed research questions focused on understanding the cognitive and emotional aspects of the registration experience
  2. Usability Testing Setup
    • Recruited a diverse group of 12 participants representing different user segments, including both new users and those who had previously abandoned registration
    • Designed testing scenarios that simulated natural discovery and registration paths
  3. Test Execution
    • Conducted moderated usability testing sessions where participants attempted to register on the platform while narrating their thought process
    • Recorded sessions for deeper analysis and stakeholder review (think aloud)
  4. Analysis and Synthesis
    • Identified patterns across user sessions and categorized usability issues by severity and frequency
    • Prioritized findings based on potential impact on conversion rates
    • Created detailed documentation of specific pain points, illustrating them with user quotes and session recordings
  5. Recommendations and Implementation
    • Developed specific design recommendations for each identified issue
    • Collaborated with designers to create improved UI prototypes
    • Worked with the development team to prioritize changes for implementation

Result

The usability testing initiative led to significant improvements:

  • 45% increase in registration conversion rate after implementing the recommended changes
  • Identification of five critical usability issues that were directly hindering registration completion
  • Development of an optimized registration flow with reduced friction points
  • Implementation of simplified form fields and more intuitive error handling

The specific improvements included:

  • Redesigning confusing UI elements that users consistently misinterpreted
  • Simplifying the multi-step registration process to reduce abandonment
  • Adding clearer indicators of progress through the registration flow
  • Implementing more human-centered error messages that provided clear resolution paths

Reflection

  1. This project revealed several important insights about UX research and its implementation:

    • The value of fresh perspective: As the first UX researcher, I brought an outside viewpoint that wasn’t subject to the “survivor bias” affecting the team. I could see issues that were causing potential users to abandon the platform—voices that were previously unheard because the team was primarily exposed to successful registrants.
    • The power of direct observation: Many of the issues discovered could not have been identified through analytics alone. Watching users struggle with specific elements of the interface revealed nuances that quantitative data couldn’t capture.

Conclusion

This case study demonstrates how targeted usability testing can dramatically improve key business metrics when applied to critical user journeys.

As the first researcher in the company, this project helped me establish credibility for UX research and laid the groundwork for building a comprehensive UX research function. The success of this initiative led to broader adoption of user-centered methodologies across other areas of the product.
